A statue to commemorate Shaka, the Zulu chieftain, is to be erected on the KwaZulu-Natal coastline.
The memorial will reside on a three-storey podium on the uThekela River, about 90 kilometres from Durban. It will be 106 metres high, making it the tallest iconic statue in the world.
The podium will include various features such as a museum, a conference centre, a hotel, a shopping centre and a restaurant. There will also be stalls for local rural craft-makers so that they can display their wares, Cape Argus reports.
According to a concept proposal for project, drawn up by Ilembe District Municipality, the statue will be of "such magnificent proportions" that it will become a "must-see" tourist attraction and "one of the most immediately recognisable landmarks in the world".
In addition, the proposal noted: "The statue of King Shaka will inspire awe in the eyes of all who see it. It will be a fitting tribute to the national hero himself and a constant reminder of the heritage it represents."
It is thought that the Shaka statue will be built in time for the FIFA 2010 World Cup.
