The most famous wine making region in South Africa is of course the Winelands, situated near to Cape Town. However, a new area has appeared as a possible contender - KwaZulu-Natal.
A South African couple came up with the idea when they visited the area and noticed that it bore a striking resemblance to the winemaking areas of France, particularly in terms of the climate and the types of soil.
Tiny and Judy Van Niekerk bought a farm and converted the stables into a winery, where Mr Van Niekerkset set about producing distinctive wines after taking the advice of consultants to ensure that he made the best of the local conditions.
According to a statement from the Zulu Kingdom: "His winemaking philosophy is to make wines as naturally as possible, harnessing the flavours and aromas intrinsic to each cultivar, rather than follow any market-driven trends that require filtering or the use of additives to manipulate the wine."
The Van Niekerks' range of KwaZulu-Natal wines have been critically acclaimed, and are produced from grapes grown on 20 hectares of established vines outside Greytown.
