New plans have been proposed to protect an area in South Africa to create a consolidated Garden Route National Park (GRNP).
South Africa's environmental affairs and tourism minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk recently visited the Wilderness National Park to consult with parks management company SANParks on the prospect of creating a 220km 'ribbon' around protected areas.
The border would be situated along the southern cape coast and would enclose a number of elements of interest to people on holiday to South Africa, including the Wilderness and Tsitsikamma parks, the Knysna lakes system and inland forest areas.
SANParks chief executive David Mabunda said that people on holidays to Garden Route in the future would see a different type of park to established locations such as the Kruger Park, where huge areas of land are fenced off.
"Fragmented examples, such as the GRNP
where protected land is unfenced and separated by private property are becoming increasingly common," he said.
Commenting on the effect the new park could have on local people, Mr Van Schalkwyk said: "The prospect of living and operating a business near the park will be tremendously exciting and will bring boundless opportunities."
SANParks regional manager Nomvuselelo Songelwa said that one of the most exciting prospects ahead of the creation of the GRNP is the reintroduction of wildlife to the region, including various antelope and mountain zebra species.
