As well as delivering future support to the market for South Africa holidays and tourism, the ongoing upgrade of Bhisho airport has created more than 300 new jobs, according to reports.
The 100 million rand (£6.7 million) development set out with the aim of maximising the economic potential of Bhisho airport.
Bhisho is the capital of the Eastern Cape region, making it an ideal airport for South Africa safari travellers heading to this area, which is well known for its wildlife.
Ncedo Kumbaca, spokesman for the Eastern Cape department of roads and transport, said that the people working on the Bhisho airport development are mostly labourers from surrounding villages.
He also revealed that the upgrade of the transport hub is expected to be of use to some major airlines, BuaNews reports.
"South African Airways has expressed its interest at the Bhisho Airport and more companies are coming forward with proposals," he said.
Bhisho has reportedly been earmarked to handle a number of international flights for the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
