In addition to boosting the number of people taking South Africa holidays, a new rail project is set to deliver a substantial boon to the employment market, according to reports.
The recently launched Kei Railway Project is expected to create more than 29,000 new employment opportunities in the Eastern Cape region.
Kei Rail is a 281km line that stretches from East London to Mthata in the Eastern Cape.
Tickets cost just 30 rand (£1.90) for a one-way trip and can be bought at all stations along the route, including Amabele, Komga and Butterworth, two hours prior to departure.
In addition to creating new jobs, the railway is expected to lay a foundation for future economic expansion, BuaNews reports.
South African transport minister Jeff Radebe said: "We strongly believe that this project will boost passenger and cargo services within the Eastern Cape province and will also stimulate tourism growth - and prove once again that rail transportation is a mass mover of our people and a backbone of our economic growth."
The project is also expected to revitalise rail lines running from the Eastern Cape to other provinces including KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Free State and the Northern Cape.
