Gautrain, the high-speed rail service under construction in the Gauteng province of South Africa, is reportedly on target for completion in time for the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
Barbara Jensen, spokeswoman for Gautrain, said the first section of the rail link was progressing on schedule despite power outages and geological problems on site, Business Day reports.
Last year, work was focused on civil engineering plans, route layouts and station designs and the coming year is expected to see widespread construction work.
Some 5.6 billion rand (£346.3 million) was spent in the 2006-07 financial year, Ms Jensen revealed, and this is set to rise to 7.7 billion rand this year.
"The highlight of 2008 will be the expected meeting of two tunnels that are being simultaneously excavated from Marlboro Portal and Mushroom Farm," she added.
Eighty kilometres of train track will be used for the new link, which will prove useful to people on South Africa holidays for the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
Laying of the track is scheduled to begin in 12 to 18 months.
