People on South Africa holidays will be able to celebrate the 90th birthday of former president Nelson Mandela on July 18th, and events to mark the occasion have already begun, according to reports.
Celebrations of 2008 as the year of Mr Mandela's 90th birthday will run throughout the year and range from exhibitions and lectures to concerts in support of 46664, the group that raises awareness and gathers backing for the fight against Aids.
The high points of the celebrations are expected to come on the days directly before and after Mr Mandela's birthday, according to SouthAfrica.info.
Mr Mandela himself, who is often respectfully referred to as Madiba, normally celebrates the occasion at home with his family in the Eastern Cape.
A recent statement from the Nelson Mandela Foundation said of the birthday festivities: "Our focus is on 'a celebration of ideas', and while there will be shows and musical events, they too are aimed [at] assisting our ongoing work in social justice work started by Madiba and the perpetuation of his ideals of freedom, non-racism and gender equality."
The major international event to mark Mr Mandela's birthday will be a 46664 concert in Hyde Park, London on June 27th.
