The Ilovo obelisk, a structure that serves as a point of interest for many people on holidays to Johannesburg, has been officially handed over to the city.
Johannesburg's city council announced that it had received the mosaic obelisk, which overlooks the upmarket suburb of Ilovo, by the local Boulevard Management District.
The artwork, which was created by Simon Stone in 2007, rises about eight metres into the air and is decorated with some 200 images on a white tile background.
Its design represents something of a contrast as some of the images depicted are of modern items including a radio, a spanner, a box of matches and a factory, but they are rendered in a hieroglyphic style.
Eric Itzkin of Johannesburg's arts, culture and heritage department said: "There are several universal images in the shape of the fleur de lis, a Greek temple, the scale, a horseshoe, some dice and chess pieces that confirm and place Joburg as a vibrant modern city within the global context - yet the very heart and epicentre, one might argue, of the African Renaissance."
People on holidays to Johannesburg can find the obelisk on the corner of Fricker and Chaplin roads in Ilovo, in the north of the city.
