The new Gautrain development, which will soon offer a new and exciting option to people on South Africa holidays, is not at risk of going over-budget, management officials have claimed.
Jack van der Merwe, chief executive of the Gautrain Management Agency, rejected claims that the project's cost could climb to 35 billion rand (£2.17 billion).
He was responding to claims made by Jeremy Cronin, chairman of the National Assembly transport committee, who suggested that construction costs are escalating, SouthAfrica.info reports.
Mr Van der Merwe said: "None of the above has happened and at this point in time, the project is within budget and there are no indications that the cost will escalate to R35 billion as stated by [Mr] Cronin."
While Mr Cronin questioned the budget of the project, he also said: "The construction of the Gautrain system is now well underway and I have no intention of waging a rearguard struggle against it. I wish it well, and the best of luck."
The Gautrain system will link Johannesburg, Pretoria and OR Tambo International airport.
