People planning South Africa holidays and other ambitious trips around the world have been advised to do some research on their destination and local customs before setting off.
According to responsibletravel.com, a company that focuses on making tourism as sustainable and beneficial to local communities as possible, reading up on a destination beforehand can lead to a more enjoyable experience.
Kristina Pentland, the company's communications manager, said that a spot of research will make people feel more prepared but also given them a sense of connection with their holiday destination.
"My advice would be to read up as much as possible before you go, on local customs and cultures and learn some words of the language too," she said.
"You'll feel better equipped to deal with situations that you find yourself in."
Another piece of advice offered by Ms Pentland, which could prove interesting to people planning a holiday in a large country such as South Africa, was to adopt a local perspective.
"Think local in everything that you do and your experiences will be richer," she said. "And remember, travelling with respect earns you respect."
