People planning holidays to southern Africa for the 2010 Fifa World Cup could be accommodated in guesthouses in Botswana, according to reports.
The Botswana Tourist Board (BTB) has given its backing to the use of domestic accommodation in order to boost the region's capacity to host the expected influx of visitors, The Voice reports.
Speaking in an interview with the newspaper, BTB quality assurance manager Stephen Ramalepa said that the plan would also offer locals the opportunity to generate some extra income.
Commenting on other aspects of Botswana's tourism industry, Mr Ramalepa said that game lodges are currently performing well, with 14 lodges given a five-star rating in a recent report.
He also indicated that people on Botswana safari holidays in the Okavango Delta have good access to top quality accommodation, with 11 lodges and camps in the area given a five-star assessment.
Botswana recently benefited from a boost in its exposure with the broadcast of The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency, a BBC programme set entirely in the southern African country.
