Holidays to Mauritius have been a popular option among travellers in the opening months of 2008, according to reports.
Figures cited by Mauritian newspaper L'Express indicate that the island is on target to achieve its goal of 975,000 visitors, compared to 906,971 in 2007.
The year got off to a strong start, with a 5.1 per cent increase in the number of tourist arrivals in January and February compared to the same period of 2007.
While the ministry of tourism is still compiling figures for March, local hotel operators indicated that Easter this year brought an influx of people on holidays to Mauritius at an early point in the season.
"This year, Easter has been celebrated at a particularly early date and we have felt the results of that last month," said Clyde Vacher, director of communications for a local resort operator.
Bissoon Mungroo, president of an organisation that represents small hotels, said the travel industry in Mauritius is "thriving" and has exceeded expectations.
Mauritius is located off the south-eastern coast of Africa and is a popular option with many travellers owing to its miles of beaches and picturesque landscapes.
