Authorities have launched a plan to improve opportunities for people on South Africa holidays by 'reclaiming' Cape Town's Signal Hill, according to reports.
Signal Hill is one of the city's top tourist spots but has been troubled by instances of crime, leading to it being closed after 21:00.
An initiative has now been launched by the city council, two private security firms and the Table Mountain national park to allow the location, which attracts more than 1.5 million visitors every year, to open until 01:00 local time.
Simon Grindrod, Cape Town's mayoral committee member for tourism, said: "The public and private sector have today sent a strong message that they will not surrender prime tourist attractions to criminal elements."
If it is successful, the pilot project could lead to the creation of a 'tourism police' unit to patrol popular attractions, similar to strategies used in major world cities such as Singapore and Cairo.
Signal Hill is a hugely popular location among people on Cape Town holidays as it offers panoramic views of Table Bay and Robben Island.
