The wealth of sights and experiences to be found on dry land means that Namibia safari holidays are a popular option among travellers, but a recent discovery suggests that the country's waters could be just as exciting.
Geologists working for the Namdeb diamond company were searching offshore when they came across a shipwreck that could date back to the 15th or 16th centuries, New Era reports.
The first part of the wreck was discovered early in April, when the head of Namdeb's mineral resource department discovered copper ingots and the remains of three bronze cannons.
Mining operations were halted and archaeologists were called in to continue the excavation of the site.
Namdeb said that the search yielded "a wealth of objects", including six bronze cannons, several tonnes of copper, more than 50 elephant tusks, weapons, coins and more.
The company added: "If the experts' assessments are correct, the shipwreck could date back to the late 1400s or early 1500s, making it a discovery of global significance."
