People planning holidays to Mozambique will be interested to hear that a judge for a green travel award has given his seal of approval to a lodge in the country.
Toby Sawday, one of the adjudicators in the 2008 Times Green Spaces Travel Awards, said that Nkwichi Lodge on the shores of Lake Malawi is a shining example of responsible tourism.
He said that, with a lot of "hot air" in this sector in the travel market, it was refreshing to be "genuinely impressed" by the Nkwichi Lodge.
The lodge consists of seven thatch, wood and stone chalets in a picturesque location, with baobab trees alongside a freshwater lake known for its snorkelling and white-sand coves.
Tourism has allowed the lodge to contribute funds to the Manda Wilderness project an initiative to turn 100,000 hectares of land into a conservation zone and Mr Sawday said that the industry could prove an important part of Mozambique's future development.
The awards judge wrote in the Times: "Tourism is now reason enough to nurture the area back to its pre-war status as one of east Africa's most ecologically abundant wilderness areas.
"With support and funding from the lodge, a clinic and six primary schools have been built, basic medical training provided, and an agriculture project established to train 60 local farmers in more sustainable methods of farming."
