People on holidays to Mauritius can now visit an idyllic islet for free following a court ruling.
Justice Abduraffeeck Hamuth passed a ruling that parts of the Ilot Gabriel islet can be considered in the public domain and should therefore be freely accessible, L'Express reports.
The injunction to allow free access to the beach was issued against Ocean Blue Company, which holds the lease for Ilot Gabriel.
Cruise operators and private pleasure craft owners brought the case forward, claiming that beach areas between low and high water marks should be accessible "to Mauritians and tourists alike".
Robin Mardemootoo, the applicant's attorney, said it was "a fundamental right" to be able to walk on beaches.
Its famous coastal areas are among the main reasons that people take holidays to Mauritius.
Grand Bay was one of the first areas of the island to benefit from the tourism boom.
