People on honeymoons in South Africa and holidays to Durban witnessed an exciting event over the weekend as the Durban Surf Ski World Cup was held.
Surf skiing is a fast and gruelling sport that uses a long, narrow, lightweight kayak with an open cockpit and a foot pedal-controlled rudder.
This year's World Cup of surf ski racing was won by South African Hank McGregor, who claimed the title for the second time in rough seas off the coast of Durban.
The course of the event took competitors from Vetch's Pier in Durban to Westbrook Beach outside Tongaat, through three-metre-high seas and a wind that gusted up to 30 knots, according to SouthAfrica.info.
While these conditions may sound difficult, this year's champion said that they were ideal for his race.
"Conditions were perfect for me, but I actually didn't know whether I had won the race until I reached the beach finish," said McGregor.
People on South Africa holidays saw competitors from the host country provide a masterclass in surf skiing at this year's event, with every one of the top five finishers hailing from South Africa.
