The honorary rangers that help ensure the safety and enjoyment of people on Kruger national park safari trips contributed some 12 million rand (£780,000) to park operating company SanParks last year.
Janssen Davies, chairman of the Honorary Rangers organisation, announced at the recent annual meeting that the contribution of 2007 was 11 per cent higher than in 2006.
It was also announced that the group achieved an 11.6 per cent increase in membership and a 25.5 per cent rise in applicants.
This translates to an overall increase of 15 per cent in membership compared to 2006.
Some awards were also given out at the recent meeting, to the Bushveld region, which was recognised as the top region for 2007, and the West Rand birding programme, which was named project of the year.
SanParks is responsible for operating a number of reserves that are popular with people on safari in South Africa, including Kruger park, Addo elephant park and the Knysna national lake area.
