September has been declared South Africa Tourism Month to
encourage domestic travellers to take South Africa holidays. Coinciding with the
start of spring in South Africa, the campaign was launched on 27 August 2009 in
Newtown, Johannesburg by South Africa’s Minister of Tourism Marthinus van
Schalkwyk.
Van Schalkwyk highlighted the importance of domestic tourists on “the tourism
industry and its competitiveness, as well as to local economic growth and job
creation”. In 2008, South Africa’s rapidly growing tourism industry contributed
R25.8-billion (US$3.3-billion) to the national GDP and provided approximately 7%
of employment in South Africa. Local tourists accounted for 77%, of the
42.5-million tourists who travelled in South Africa during 2008.
The Sho’t Left billboard campaign aims to promote local tourism by generating
awareness amongst local travellers on destinations within South Africa. The
campaign is targeting Gauteng province which is South Africa’s greatest source
of domestic tourists. SA Tourism has also created special offers with hotel
groups, airlines and travel agencies for South Africans travelling on South
Africa holidays to local destinations.
The campaign will culminate on 27 September with the celebrations planned around
the country for World Tourism Day.
2 by 2 Holidays are specialists in
South Africa holidays and
other regional destinations including Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique and
Mauritius.
