Domestic airline Airlink is in talks with the Eastern Cape
government to introduce direct flights between Cape Town and Mthatha, gateway to
the Wild Coast, subject to the completion of planned infrastructure
improvements. The upgrade of Mthatha Airport is scheduled to start by July 2009
and includes improvements to the runway lights which will allow for the
introduction of night flights. These developments will benefit local businesses,
government and Wild Coast holiday makers by providing greater accessibility to
the region.
Direct flights will cut out the need for a 3 hour drive from East London making
the area more accessible to travellers on Wild Coast holidays. As a popular
tourist destination, the Wild Coast combines dramatic scenery, unspoilt beaches,
adventurous activities and cultural landmarks, including the birthplace of
Nelson Mandela, making it a family friendly destination.
Flights services are also planned with other domestic carriers between Mthatha /
Johannesburg and Mthatha / Durban once the infrastructure upgrades have been
completed.
