The 2009 Freedom Challenge, also known as The Race Across
South Africa, is currently underway with 60 mountain bikers aiming to complete
the 2,300 kilometers race in under 26 days. Cycling from Pietermaritzburg
through the Karoo to Paarl, outside Cape Town this route takes in some of South
Africa’s most challenging and spectacular scenery with the highest altitude of
2,700 meters along the way.
Last years winner Tim James aims to shave 2 ½ days off his previous time to
complete the challenge in 12 days. For riders this is the ultimate personal
challenge as they compete in the challenge non-stop with no individual support
except for an official rest stop every 100 kilometers.
For the slightly less intrepid the Freedom Trail can be broken into smaller,
more manageable sections for a southern Africa cycling holiday with a
difference. The Freedom Trail organisers ultimately aim to create an unbroken
mountain biking route from Kilimanjaro to Cape Town. This will promote adventure
sports and tourism in the region as well as supporting community projects en
route.
