Table Mountain is a strong contender in the quest to
identify the world’s 7 Wonders of Nature. Cape Town’s iconic landmark – the
number one destination of travellers on southern African holidays - has been
nominated as South Africa’s representative in the competition. As of 18 June
2009, Table Mountain had been ranked number 6 in Mountains and Volcanoes
category by internet voters giving the site a good chance at making it into the
top 77 contenders (one of 11 contenders for each of seven categories). South
Africa’s other candidate is The Kalahari Desert (shared between Botswana,
Namibia and South Africa) was ranked first place in its category Landscapes and
Ice Formations as of 18 June 2009.
A total of 261 sites are completing in seven categories for a spot in the top 7.
One site has been selected for each of 223 countries and sites bordering two or
more countries, for example Zambia and Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls, have automatic
entry. The top 77 nominees will be determined by the general public through
internet voting which is open until midnight on 7 July 2009. Over 1 billion
participants are expected to cast their vote.
A panel of experts will select 21 finalists which will be announced on 21 July
2009. The final winners however will only be unveiled in 2011.
