The Gautrain will bring Johannesburg's OR Tambo
International Airport and it’s northern suburbs closer together with a new
high-speed train link which is currently under development. The essential
commuter train link between Joburg, Midrand and Pretoria will also connect
travellers transiting between the airport and Sandton – Johannesburg’s primary
destination for travellers on Johannesburg holidays - and also those transiting
through this gateway airport to other destinations in South Africa.
The Gautrain service will be directly accessible from the airport with an access
link between Rhodesfield Gautrain Station and the airport departures level of
the new central terminal building. At Sandton Station luggage storage facilities
will be available with remote airport check-in facilities planned for the
future. Buses will transfer passengers from Sandton Station to other local
destinations in Gauteng.
The infrastructure at airport is nearly complete for the new rail service
however it is uncertain whether the Gautrain link between the airport and
Sandton will be completed in time for the Football World Cup 2010. An
announcement is expected within the next three months.
