Today the world is celebrating the 91st birthday of South
Africa’s icon Nelson Mandela who made many personal sacrifices to bring about
peace and reconciliation in South Africa. Mandela, affectionately known as
Madiba, will celebrate quietly with a party at his Houghton home with his wife,
Graca Machel and surrounded by family and friends.
South Africans and overseas tourists on South Africa holidays can join in the
national celebrations which will take place in Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown.
A full programme of festivities includes speeches, music and dance starting at
9am.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation and the 46664 Campaign calling on the South
African government to declare 18 July Mandela Day to recognise the life time of
work and sacrifice Mandela gave to the South African people to bring about peace
and reconciliation in the country. Instead of making it a holiday the proposal
is a national day of service within the community. Government officials and
other world leaders have indicated their support for this initiative as well as
numerous local and international actors, sports stars and individuals involved
in the charitable sector.
