South Africa on the Braille Trail

Published: 12/08/2009

South Africa is firmly on the Braille Trail with several destinations providing a sensory experience to visually impaired travellers. Travellers with disabilities often have challenges travelling abroad where services and standards may not be on par with their home country. South Africa is quickly establishing itself as an accessible holiday destination for travellers with visual disabilities with several destinations where travellers can discover nature through the touch and smell.

The most popular South Africa accessible holiday destinations are the Braille Trails in the Kruger National Park and in Cape Town’s Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. In the Kruger National Park visitors can wander along the accessible trail at Berg-en-Dal using guide ropes and Braille signage to explore the unique flora of the area. In the historic Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens the fragrance garden is a popular stop for visually impaired travellers visiting Cape Town. The fragrance garden allows visitors to explore the plant world through the senses of touch, feel and smell.

Lesser known destinations are also providing sensory experiences for travellers on South Africa accessible holidays. The Karoo National Park in the Eastern Cape has 400 meter trail where visitors can discover the evolution of complex ecosystems through a series of fossils. Along the Garden Route, Mossel Bay’s Botanical Garden the focus is on the plant world and the traditional use of plants for medical use.
