Sunday marked the 200-day countdown to the kick-off of the
2010 World Cup coinciding with a change in focus from preparation to
anticipation. Organisers, participating teams and fans alike are gearing up to
the much anticipated football tournament in June 2010.
Organisers have expressed confidence in South Africa’s preparedness for the
World Cup. Infrastructure preparations are on track with stadiums expected to be
completed in time and airport upgrades nearing completion. Last week a flag
raising ceremony was held at Soccer City, South Africa's flagship 2010 stadium
with Danny Jordaan, 2010 Organising Committee chief executive commenting that
“[the] flags represent the teams, the hundreds and thousands of fans, and the
hopes of nations for the 2010 Fifa World Cup next year”.
The final 32 participating teams have been announced and awaiting the final draw
on 4 December 2009. Jordaan highlights the shift in focus on the teams'
preparations for the tournament.
Fans are also anticipating their opportunities for a one in a lifetime South
Africa football holiday with tour operators and tourist industry officials
reporting a steady stream of enquiries and bookings for the months leading up to
and following the World Cup.
