ZPM10A: Serengeti Safari +
Zanzibar
Day 1
Arrive Nairobi Airport and transfer to your
connecting flight to Kilimanjaro Airport in
Tanzania, where you will be met and transferred to the
town of Arusha.
Check in and relax in your wonderfully warm East African
safari surroundings, under clear blue skies.
Day 2
This
morning travel 2-hours overland from Arusha to
Tarangire National Park.
One of the least visited of Tanzania's northern game
parks, this wonderful wildlife reserve is famous for its
giant baobabs and migratory wildlife. After viewing the
baobabs and surrounding wildlife, check into your lodge
and enjoy the amazing spectacle of an East African
sunset.
Day 3
At leisure to relax and explore Tarangire National
Park with your driver/guide.
The dense bush and hilly terrain is dominated by the
Tarangire River, which attracts large numbers of
migrating animals during the dry months, especially
between July and September. Tarangire retains an air of
undiscovered Africa - particularly in the south of the
park - and boasts huge numbers of elephants, wildebeest,
zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland.
Day 4
A full day on the road today, as you travel 7-hours
overland from Tarangire National Park
to
your safari camp in the great Serengeti, which
means "Endless Plain".
A World Heritage site, Serengeti National Park
hosts the largest and longest wildlife overland
migration in the world as around October each year,
nearly 2 million animals travel 500 miles from the
northern hills toward the southern plains - crossing the
Mara River in pursuit of the rains. In April the
animals return to the north, through the west, once
again crossing the Mara River in their migration.
Day 5
Today is devoted to game viewing in the great Serengeti
National Park.
This vast conservation area, which is larger than
Northern Ireland, lies between Lake Victoria in the
west, Lake Eyasi in the south and the Great Rift Valley
in the east. The landscape varies from open grass plains
in the south, savanna with scattered acacia trees in the
centre, hilly wooded grasslands in the north and
woodlands and clay pans in the west - with small rivers,
lakes ands swamps scattered throughout.
With more than 70 large mammals and over 500 other
animal species, including large prides of lions and
great herds of wildebeest, zebras and gazelle,
outstanding game viewing is guaranteed on a scale only
seen in East Africa. Bird watching is also outstanding.
Day 6
Today
transfer overland to the famous Ngorongoro Crater.
In the afternoon enjoy a tour into the basin of the
Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest intact
caldera forming a spectacular bowl of about 265 square
kilometres with sides up to 2,000 feet (600m) deep.
Although animals are free to move in and out of this
contained environment, the rich volcanic soil, lush
forests and spring lakes on the crater floor attract
both grazers and predators all year round, with up to
30,00 animals living in the crater - including lions on
the open savannah and elephants and monkeys in the
forests. You may also see flamingos in the lake area. In
the late afternoon check in to your lodge and enjoy the
beauty of this area.
Day 7
Today transfer overland from Ngorongoro to
Arusha Airport for your flight to Zanzibar.
You will be met at Zanzibar airport and transferred to
your hotel on the beautiful Zanzibar Archipelago.
Check in and relax in your wonderful surroundings on
this exotic East African spice island.
Day 8
Today enjoy a half day tour through the narrow streets
of fascinating Stone Town, including the bustling
market, the ornately carved and studded doors,
cathedrals and mosques. Also visit the Arab Fort, the
Palace Museum and Dr Livingstone's house.
In the afternoon return to your resort, or enjoy more
free time shopping and exploring Stone Town.
Days 9 - 10
At
leisure to relax on the warm golden Indian Ocean
beaches of the Zanzibar Archipelago.
You can also enjoy a traditional Dhow cruise, catamaran
sailing, magnificent scuba diving or deep sea fishing.
If you wish to explore the island further, day
excursions available include a Spice Island tour,
a visit to Josani Forest or to the Kizimkazi
Dolphins.
Day 11
Transfer to Zanzibar Airport for your light
aircraft flight to Dar Es Salaam Airport and
flight home.
