Colombia Holidays

Chosen by Lonely Planet as their top destination for 2017, Colombia’s years of turbulence are beginning to be a distant memory. The country is now considered a model of biodiversity with stunning Andean landscapes and modern, welcoming cities. Our Colombia holidays bring together vibrant cultures, unspoilt Caribbean beaches, charming colonial cities and the fertile rolling hills of the Coffee Region. Despite the upheavals of the last century, Colombia still lays claim to the first constitutional government in South America.

Dominated by the magnificent Andes mountain range, Colombia was colonised by the Spanish in 1499 who dubbed it the New Granada. It’s one of the most bio-diverse countries in the world so be sure to include some time exploring the extraordinary animal, bird and plant life when planning a holiday to Colombia.

Its cities too are bustling and full of life too. The capital Bogota is a cultural revelation, with its astonishing Gold Museum and the superbly preserved downtown area, La Candelaria. Here you can revel in the fascinating mix of old colonial and modern attractions. The remarkable Salt Cathedral at Zapaquira is a highly recommended excursion and don't miss Villa de Leyva, one of Colombia’s most charming colonial villages. Bogota’s location high in the Andes is breath-taking and sets the tone for a holiday in this spectacularly scenic country.

The capital is more than matched for attractions and visitors by the beautiful Caribbean coast city of Cartagena. The mix of old and new is even more stunning, with the meticulously restored colonial walled town and castle contrasting with modern hotels and luxurious beaches. The relaxed atmosphere and picturesque cobbled streets of the old town are perfect for an evening stroll and it’s a place best explored on foot. It’s with good reason that Cartagena is regularly the first destination on the ‘team sheet’ when planning a Colombia holiday.

The country’s impressive bio diversity can be seen in the thick tropical vegetation of Tayrona National Park, set on the Caribbean Coast to the east of Cartagena. One of Colombia’s most visited national parks, the verdant hills provide a spectacular backdrop to the pristine white sandy beaches. Swimming is limited here by strong currents, so for first class diving and snorkelling, as well as an entrancing easy-going Latin vibe, head to Colombia’s Caribbean archipelago of San Andres and Providencia.

Colombian coffee is legendary and spending a few days in the Coffee Region is a popular choice. The tranquil rolling hills are the perfect setting for some down time, staying in a working coffee hacienda. This region is also home to the country’s national plant, the rare and intriguing Wax Palm. For those looking for more action, San Gil and the Rio Fonce are Colombia’s white-water rafting capital. Here you can also horse ride, fish and hike.

Medellin, Colombia’s second city is now very much on the tourist map with its unique blend of art, tango and cable car network. It has become a model of regeneration and was recently voted the world’s most innovative city. Nearby you can go quad biking in the mountains or travel to the coast to experience the idyllic beaches in the Nuqui region. Here the unspoilt coast and rainforest backdrop is the ideal place to spot whales and lazy the day away. This is an ideal stopping off point on Colombia holidays that truly takes you off the beaten track.
