India
India offers an extraordinary cultural experience, with a rich and ancient history dating back millennia. Boasting over 30 World Heritage Sites, it has amazing architecture and many iconic buildings, including the breathtakingly beautiful Taj Mahal. It also has numerous intricate Hindu temples, and many incredible forts and palaces from the Maharaja era - most notably in the region known as the Golden Triangle - Delhi, Jaipur & Agra - which is best explored on a private tour travelling with your own driver/guides. Luxury train travel is also popular, as this allows you to journey back in time to the opulence of a royal yesteryear. Alternatively a trip on one of the open-sided narrow gauge ‘Toy Trains’, built in colonial times to access hill stations such as Shimla and Ooty, is an unforgettable experience.
Comprises 29 different states and 7 union territories, and with over 20 official languages, India is extremely diverse - with each state having its own distinctive culture, saris and curries. The laid-back southern state of Kerala, for example, is know for its traditional houseboats found on its extensive system of ‘backwaters’ (lakes), as well as for yoga and Ayurvedic wellness treatments. Amritsar is the home of the remarkable Golden Temple, Shimla is a beautiful hill station in the Himalayas and Darjeeling is known for its tea plantations and monasteries. The small state of Goa is renowned for its wonderful beaches.
Vivid and exuberant festivals, such as Holi and Diwali, are a way of life in India, which is also the land of Royal Bengal tigers, Asian elephants and Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book. This rapidly developing country has many different facets, colours and landscapes that cannot be covered in a single trip, so it’s best to concentrate on one region at a time – then return for another visit. Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka by contrast is a predominantly Buddhist country, with some of the best preserved ancient Buddhist statues and shrines in the world, including the astonishing Dambulla Cave Temple, the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, ancient Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura. It is an important tea producer and has many magnificent Indian Ocean beaches, as well as historic Galle Fort.
For nature lovers, Sri Lanka has excellent birding, and Yala and Udawalawe National Parks are some of the best place on the Indian sub-continent to see leopards and Asian elephants in the wild. Nepal & Bhutan
Nepal is an important trekking destination, as it is the gateway to the beautiful Annapurna Trail and mighty Mount Everest, whilst peaceful Bhutan has remote Buddhist monasteries and soaring Himalayan peak to explore.
