More Scuba Dive Destinations:  Aliwal Shoal - Sodwana Bay or return to Scuba Diving Safaris

The Reef

Dive Sites

The Gap

  • Two-Mile Reef – is a short barrier reef situated 3 miles from “The Gap”, the narrow channel separating the two main islands of the archipelago: Benguerua and Bazaruto. This flat top reef supports a bewildering array of beautiful reef fish, including coachman, fusilier, snapper and surgeon. Also a colourful diversity of hard and soft corals, starfish and anemones. Expect to see schools of pelagic fish, the endangered dugong, and different species of turtles, dolphins, rays, sharks and seasonal humpbacked whales
    Depth: 6 to 21 m

  • Aquarium Pool – lies within Two-Mile reef and features an amazing variety of fish and hard and soft coral. This is the best snorkelling spot along the Mozambique coast (low tide only)
    Depth: .05 to 7 m

Benguerua Island

  • Home Reef – is a man-made reef off the beach at Marlin Lodge, comprising a sunken yacht. See potato bass and a wide variety of reef and game fish
    Depth: 10 to 12 m

  • House Reef – situated less than 2 miles from Marlin Lodge, this is a popular spot for resort course divers and night dives

  • Magaruque Island Express – is a drift dive, located to the south of Benguerua Island and separated by a narrow channel. Channel Reef protects stone fish and moray eels, amongst others. Deep Hole off the eastern shore of the island attracts schools of barracuda and stumpnose. Mild to strong current
    Depth: 12 to 28 m

  • Cabo San Sebastio – is a rocky reef just off the southern tip of Benguerua Island where moray eels, manta rays and whale sharks are frequently sited. This reef offers the best diving in the vicinity and is a deep diver's dream! There is also a huge reef to allow shallow diving
    Depth: Up to 40 m

Lighthouse & Turtle Reef – comprising potholes eroded into rock shelves off the northern end of the island
    Depth: 12 to 25 m

Bazaruto Island

  • North Point – offers 23 miles of reef diving, including:

  • Brindle Bass Ridge – a large reef that features an impressive concentration of snappers, angelfish, rubberlips, brindle bass and reef sharks. An unusual depression, the Toilet Bowl, is lined with dazzling soft corals
    Depth: Up to 18 m

  • Potholes – can only be dived in flat conditions. Fin from pothole to pothole, where you often see blacktip reef sharks. Also soft corals and interesting tunnels to explore
    Depth: 12 m

  • Manta Ray Reef – is a flat reef where schools of fish such as crescent-tailed big eyes and blue-banded snappers are regularly seen. The reef has spectacular concentrations of anemones sheltering both nose-stripe and two-bar clownfish. Green turtles are also frequently seen
    Depth: Up to 15 m

  • Rainbow Runner Reef – is where divers should concentrate on watching the open ocean above the sea floor. Manta (in season) and spotted eagle rays, potato and brindle bass, kingfish, rainbow runner, green jobfish and Zambezi sharks pass through this area. The reef also has impressive accumulations of green-tree and whip corals
    Depth: Up to 25 m

  • Turtle Ridge – is a narrow ridge frequented by turtles and games fish such as barracuda
    Depth: 14 m

  • Five Mile Reef – is situated off the south eastern point of Bazaruto Island, with a similar structure to Two-Mile Reef but not as diverse
    Depth: 8 to 20 m
