Holidays to Bengal

Holidays to Bengal, Sikkim & Assam

Holidays to Bengal are dominated by the mighty River Ganges that runs all the way from the Himalayas, through the sacred city of Varanasi, to Calcutta and the Sunderbans Delta, a wildlife hotspot and World Heritage Site.

Holidays to Bengal usually begin in Calcutta (now known as Kolkata), the third largest city in India. With a population of over 20 million people, this was the original capital of British India before it was moved to Delhi. Here you can see some wonderful examples of British colonial architecture, as well as visiting the Mother Teresa mission.

A wonderful way of experiencing holidays to Bengal is aboard a luxury river boat that travels down the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers, with cultural stops along the way to observe the daily lives of the local people.

The Sundarbans Delta is another must-see on holidays to Bengal, as this is the largest tidal mangrove forest in the word and a World Heritage Site. Usually explored by small boat, these waterways are home to abundant bird life, many reptiles and small mammals, as well as being a tiger reserve.

West Bengal is often combined with holidays to Sikkim & Assam in the northeast – with a highlight being a visit to the hill station at Darjeeling, famous for its distinctive black tea and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, fondly known at the “Toy Train”. Here you can visit the Ghoom monastery or, for a truly authentic cultural experience, venture further afield to Gangtok with its Tibetan Buddhist monasteries.

For wildlife enthusiasts, Kaziranga National Park in Assam has two thirds of the world’s remaining population of severely endangered one-horned rhino. This park is home to large breeding populations of Asian elephant, water buffalo and swamp deer as well as being a tiger reserve, where you can experience game viewing on the back of an elephant.

Holidays to Sikkim & Assam can be combined with a visit to Chitwan National Park in Nepal, one of the richest wildlife areas in Asia, or the Buddhist country of Bhutan, with monasteries in breathtaking locations such as Tiger’s Nest (Taktsang).
