Bhutan is a mountain kingdom perched high on the eastern rim of the spectacular Himalayas, which famously measures its 'Gross National Happiness' index each year. With Tibet to the north and India to the south, this 'Land of the Thunder Dragon' is the last bastion of Mahayana Buddhism - with chanting red-robed monks, sacred monasteries that sit precariously on sheer cliffs, and fluttering prayer flags that line the high ridges.
Bhutan has many magnificent fortresses ('dzongs') and monasteries. These include Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest) which clings to cliffs above the forested Paro Valley, and is Bhutan's most iconic site. If you hike up its many steps, you will be rewarded with stunning panoramas over the valley below. Tashi Choe Dzong is a massive monastery and fortress on the northern edge of the capital, Thimphu, and is the seat of Bhutan's government. Punakha Dzong is a 17th century fortess set in a pristine valley, whilst exquisite Gangtey Monastery is situated in the scenic Phobjikha Valley.
Approximately the size of Switzerland, this small country has the highest proportion of protected land in all of Asia. With its ancient traditions and dramatic landscapes that range from subtropical plains to steep mountains and valleys, Bhutan is a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature, rest and rejuvenate. Trekking is also very popular, whatever your level of ability.
A highlight of Bhutan guided tours & holidays is mixing with the locals at a ‘tshechu’. These exuberant festivals take place throughout the year and last for several days, with colourful masked performers doing elaborate dances in the dzongs. Archery contests also take place, as this is the national sport. Many people plan their visit to Bhutan to coincide with one of these festivals.
With its policy of low-impact, high-value tourim, only a resticted number of visitors are permitted to enter Bhutan each year. Most accommodation is cozy and comfortable, but there are also a handful of enchanting luxury mountain retreats.
