Spring is a magical time in Finland, as the snow melts, thousands of migratory birds return, and the season’s drama unfolds in exceptional northern light. This dedicated photo safari focuses on its most spectacular performances: the raw energy of a black grouse lek, elegant ruffs in vibrant breeding plumage, and majestic eagle owls and goshawks from a nocturnal forest hide. Two flexible evening sessions follow the latest sightings, from owls and woodpeckers in taiga forest to red-and black-throated divers on the wetlands.

Day 1
Arrive at Oulu Airport where you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel in Liminka, a paradise for birders celebrated for its vast wetlands and abundant birdlife. After settling into your room, join your guides and fellow photographers for dinner, as you discuss the days ahead and the key species you’ll be focusing on. Round off the evening with your first photography session in the field, taking advantage of the soft northern light.

The target species for tonight will be shaped by local conditions and the latest sightings, allowing your guides to take you where the photo opportunities are best. With luck, the focus will be on owls, in particular great grey, Tengmalm’s, and pygmy owls, though you may encounter a variety of other northern species including Ural and short-eared owls. If owl activity is quiet, attention shifts to the surrounding woodland, where black and three-toed woodpeckers, alongside other taiga forest species, often provide excellent subjects.
Day 2
Rise before dawn to witness one of Finland’s most absorbing wildlife displays, as black grouse gather on the lek. From a carefully positioned hide, watch males strut and spar across the open ground, tails flared and plumage gleaming, while their low bubbling calls carry through the cool morning air. Return to the hotel for a well-earned breakfast, followed by time at leisure to rest and recharge ahead of tonight’s outing. This evening, the focus shifts to raptors as you settle into a warm, purpose-built forest hide, converted from a caravan for comfort during the long night. Here, the star attraction is the imposing eagle owl, a powerful nocturnal hunter that makes a compelling subject through the lens. With discreet LED lighting at the feeding site, you can photograph the action in natural-looking light, with minimal disturbance. As dawn approaches, goshawks may sweep into the clearing, their sudden arrivals, rapid chases, and bold landings adding drama and pace to the morning’s photography.
Day 3
After the long night-time photography session, return to the hotel for a hearty breakfast followed by time to unwind and go through your images.

This evening, turn your attention to the nearby wetlands, focusing on black-throated and red-throated divers in their striking breeding plumage. On calm lakes, these elegant birds glide low in the water, offering beautiful reflections and clean backgrounds, particularly when the surface glows with soft evening light.
Depending on the conditions and how spring is progressing, your guides may explore other subjects that are active and rewarding to photograph at this time of year, ensuring that you make the most of every session.
Day 4
Start today with another pre-dawn visit to the black grouse hides, where no two mornings are ever quite the same. Subtle shifts in behaviour, light, and weather bring fresh encounters and new photographic possibilities each time you return, rewarding those early starts.

After breakfast and a relaxing interlude back at the hotel, enjoy an early dinner before returning to the Liminka Bay wetlands to photograph ruffs, one of the real stars of the season. From a purpose-built hide set beside a shallow flooded meadow, watch males feed, posture, and strut through a range of courtship displays. As golden evening light backlights the scene, their intricate breeding plumage and bold movements are mirrored in the surface on calm nights, creating superb opportunities for striking reflection shots.
Day 5
Today is devoted to the elegant ruffs, with photography at both dawn and dusk. Return to the shallow flooded meadow in the soft, pre-dawn light, when the birds are usually at their most active, sometimes shrouded in an early morning mist. Although not a traditional lek location, with luck you’ll witness males posture, chase, and spar, showing off their ornate breeding plumage and offering opportunities to capture their courtship behaviours in the gentle, atmospheric conditions.

Return to the hotel for breakfast and time to rest, recharge, and review your images, before an early dinner. Then it’s back to the hides for another evening session with the ruffs, capturing their remarkable variation in colour and plumage in warm, low-angled light as the sun slips towards the horizon.
In addition to ruff, this shallow wetland attracts a range of waders and waterbirds, including black-tailed godwit, wood sandpiper, common and spotted redshank, greenshank, Eurasian curlew, lapwing, plus various gulls and ducks, offering a variety of compelling subjects.
Day 6
On your final morning, return to the ruff hides for one last session on the flooded meadow. Here, the soft front and side light of the early morning reveals feather detail and colour as you capture elegant movements and subtle interactions, their reflections rippling gently across the still water. It’s a peaceful, rewarding finale, and a chance to create those final images that complete your story of spring in Finland. Return to the hotel for a hearty breakfast, before packing and a transfer back to Oulu Airport, as you reflect on the week’s highlights.
