Falkland Islands holidays
Windswept and remote, Falkland Islands holidays offer an exciting adventure for nature lovers who want to experience a true wildlife wilderness in this British Overseas Territory close to Antarctica and see wildlife surviving at the extremes of nature.
At about 4,700 square miles (12,000 sq km), the Falkland Islands are only a little larger than Gibraltar, with two main islands - East Falkland and West Falkland - as well as over 770 smaller islands. The islands provide a haven for many different species of seabird and you’ll share the remote beaches with elephant seals, penguins, southern sea lions and a huge array of marine birds.
The ownership of these islands (known as the Malvinas) has been disputed by Argentina since the 18th century. In 1982 they were briefly invaded, before being re-captured by Britain and you can visit many of these Falkland War battlefield sites. You will find red phone boxes and fish & chip shops in the capital town of Port Stanley, with simple homestay accommodation in most other centres and a friendly welcome from the islanders.
Most visitors to the Falklands will arrive by air - either via Santiago & Punta Arenas in Chile; São Paolo in Brazil, or on the direct RAF flight from Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, England. Internal light aircraft flights link the various islands.
If you enjoy life at sea, you can also visit the Falkland Islands as part of an expedition cruise. As the islands lie approximately 480 km east of Patagonia, typically you’ll begin your voyage from the southernmost towns of Ushuaia in Argentina, or Punta Arenas in Chile. From here ships sail through the Beagle Channel and then head northeast across the South Atlantic towards the islands. Expedition cruise holidays to the Falkland Islands are often combined with South Georgia and Antarctica, the incredible ‘white continent’.

Life on board will vary according to the standard of expedition cruise booked, with cosy cabins and open plan lounge and dining rooms. You’ll be kept busy with onboard lectures by knowledgeable naturalists and many opportunities to go up on deck to look for ocean wildlife. With an open bridge policy you can also join officers on the bridge and learn about navigation as you watch for marine life.
Excursions on shore are led by lecturers and naturalists and will visit vast seabird colonies and penguin breeding grounds. On West Falkland Island Black-browed albatrosses and Rockhopper penguins nest closely together and on nearby Carcass Island many small birds nest alongside Gentoo and Magellanic penguins. You may also spot both Peale’s and Commerson’s dolphins near to the shoreline.
In the quaint capital of Port Stanley, located on East Falkland Island, there are opportunities to see the endemic and flightless Falkland steamer duck as well as Dolphin gulls and Kelp duck. Keen birders can look for Peregrine falcons, Black-crowned night herons and Red-backed hawks. Visitors may also enjoy a visit to the Falkland Islands Museum and National Trust, which has galleries covering the islands' social and maritime history as well as natural history.
