Carcass Island is home to seals, dolphins and penguins, whilst nearby West Point Island has thousands of Black-browed albatross and a huge colony of Rockhopper penguins. Sea Lion Island has the largest breeding colony of Southern elephant seals in the world. Pebble Island has four of the five species of penguins found in the Falklands and some monuments from the Falklands War. Bleaker Island also has a large penguin colony.
Outside of Stanley, expect simple homestay accommodation and a friendly welcome from the islanders. Access to the smaller islands is by light aircraft flights.
Falkland Island holidays are often combined with Chile, as there is weekly flight from Punta Arenas. A more expensive option is the direct flights from the RAF base at Brize Norton, UK in Oxfordshire.
You can also combine the Falklands with an Antarctica cruise. As the islands lie approximately 480 km east of Patagonia, typically you’ll begin your expedition cruise from Argentina's southernmost town of Ushuaia. From here ships sail through the Beagle Channel and then head northeast across the South Atlantic towards the Fakland Islands. Life on board a Falklands & Antarctica cruise will vary according to the standard of expedition cruise booked with a cosy cabin, open plan lounge and dining room. You’ll be kept busy with onboard lectures by knowledgeable naturalists and there will be many opportunities to go up on deck to look for ocean wildlife. With an open bridge policy, you can also join officers on the bridge and learn about navigation as you watch for marine life.
Excursions on shore are led by lecturers and naturalists and you will visit vast seabird colonies and penguin breeding grounds. On West Falkland Island black-browed albatrosses and rockhopper penguins nest closely together and on nearby Carcass Island many small birds nest alongside gentoo and Magellanic penguins. You may also spot both Peale’s and Commerson’s dolphins near to the shoreline.
In the quaint capital of Stanley, located on East Falkland Island, there are opportunities to see the endemic and flightless Falkland steamer duck, as well as Dolphin gulls and Kelp duck. Keen birders can look for peregrine falcons, black-crowned night herons and red-backed hawks. Visitors may also enjoy a visit to the Falkland Islands Museum and National Trust, which has galleries covering the islands' social and maritime history, as well as its natural history.
