For a more relaxed beach experience many visitors choose to stay in Jose Ignacio, 12 miles northeast of Punta del Este. Much developed in recent years, this is a chic resort with some lovely boutique hotels and upmarket restaurants, but it retains a bohemian feel with dirt roads and hand painted road signs. Although no longer a quiet fishing port, it is still a charming place to kick back and enjoy beach life, combined with wildlife holidays & birding tours in Uruguay, Punta del Este & Jose Ignacio. There are fewer tourists here than in Punta del Este and long stretches of beach. For a terrific view of the area, climb to the top of the 45m lighthouse.
