When to go to Chile

Chile is a very long and narrow country, with many different weather patterns, so the best time to visit Chile varies by region.

The best time to visit Santiago and the Lake District is from November to March (warm, dry summer), but April/May and September/October are also very pleasant.

Patagonia is best from November to March but, being so far south, the weather can be very changeable. Most facilities close from April to August, when heavy clouds obscure the mountains and temperatures drop very sharply.

Atacama can be visited all year round, although the summer heat can be very intense from January to March when there is the risk of the 'Altiplano Winter' phenomenon (one to two weeks of very heavy rain, which can flood the main sights). In the winter temperatures drop below freezing at night. The Fiesta de la Candelaria is held in late January/early February.

Easter Island can be visited all year round, with the Tapati Rapa Nui cultural festival taking place in February.

The whale watching and trout fishing season is from November to April.

The best time for birding is from November to February.
