Costa Rica Holidays

Politically stable and with a reputation for outstanding environmental practices, Costa Rica has looked after its natural riches well. For a holiday immersed in nature it’s hard to beat. In this pocket-sized country, over 25% of the land is protected by national parks and its bio-diversity rivals that of some of its larger South America cousins. Costa Rica holidays can take you deep into the rainforest, to cloud forest sloped volcanoes and to wild untouched coastlines. Here there are acrobatic monkeys, exquisite humming birds, frogs in all colours and shades and and pristine beaches where marine turtles come to nest.

Outdoor activities abound and whether you like gentle pursuits or want an adrenalin fix, your Costa Rica holiday itinerary can be tailored to suit. Float down the Corobicí River looking for king fishers, otters and Howler monkeys or grab a paddle and go white water rafting on the Reventazón or Pacuare rivers. In Arenal luxuriate in the warm thermal springs or take the thrilling eight-stage zip-line with stunning aerial views of the lake and volcano. Learn the meaning of Pura Vida as you lie in a hammock beside a palm-fringed beach in Corcovado or climb Cerro Chirripo, the highest peak in the country.

One of the joys of holidays to Costa Rica is that it is easy to get around. Roads are good, self-driving is safe and a network of light aircraft connections join up key destinations if time is tight. Accommodation of all styles and prices is available and is of a high standard. English is widely understood and the guiding is excellent.

Among the most-loved national parks in Costa Rica is Tortuguero on the Caribbean Coast. A system of tranquil canals and rivers make exploring by boat the best way to get up close to nature. On its untouched beaches the Green turtle nesting season is between June and November. To the west of Tortuguero the iconic Monteverde Cloud Forest is famous for its sightings of the Resplendent quetzal. And for some of the best rainforest trekking in Latin America, Corcovado National Park in the southeast Pacific Coast is the place to go.

For holidays in Costa Rica flights from the UK go via the USA or Madrid and arrive into the capital San Jose, located in the central highlands. The country is divided roughly down the middle by a range of volcanoes with the Poas Volcano within easy reach of a half-day trip from San Jose. Some international flights also go to Liberia in the north, which is convenient for the more developed Pacific beaches of Guanacaste province.

You will find some of the best golden sand beaches on the Pacific coast at Manuel Antonio National Park. Listed by Forbes magazine as one of the top ten most beautiful national parks, Manuel Antonio is small but the diversity of wildlife is astonishing with over a hundred species of mammal and 184 recorded bird species.

Unlike other Central America countries, a holiday in Costa Rica cannot boast any large tourist-attracting ruins.  At a cross roads between Mexico and South America, the indigenous people traded both north and south but little remains beyond artefacts. There are however, an assortment of pre-Columbian spheres, ranging from a few centimetres in diameter to two metres, that have been designated a World Heritage Site. Located in southern Costa Rica in the Diquis Delta, the spheres or balls are thought to originate from 500-1500 BC. There are plans to develop the site for tourism in the future.
