Today enjoy a full day privately guided trip driving 2-hours to Petropolis, the imperial city of Brazil, set in the mountains north of Rio. Once favoured by emperors and aristocrats, this city is filled with palaces and surrounded by beautiful scenery.
Before arriving in Petropolis, we will discover the Norman façade of the former casino hotel, the Quitandinha, built in the 1940's, with elegant halls and lovely gardens.
We continue our visit to the Imperial Museum, once the summer residence of Emperor Dom Pedro II, which showcases furniture, jewels and other objects from Brazil's imperial period.
This afternoon we will continue to the Crystal Palace you can appreciate this stunning glass and iron structure built in the late 19th century. Built at the same time as the Eiffel Tower, it perfectly represents the new architectural style of the industrial revolution. It was inaugurated in 1884 however the most important event took place in 1888, on Easter Sunday, when 103 slaves of Petropolis received their titles of freedom from the hands of Princess Isabella.
You will also have the opportunity to visit Rio Negra Palace, built in the early 20th century and the summer residence of the president of Brazil, known for its grand architecture and beautiful gardens. São Pedro de Alcântara, a beautiful neo-Gothic cathedral which is the final resting place of Brazil's imperial family and Casa de Santos Dumont - the home of this famous aviation pioneer.
Lunch is at your own account. At the end of the day, you will be driven back to Rio.
