Brazil holidays to Fernando de Noronha start in Recife, the capital of the northeastern state of Pernambuco which takes its name from the offshore ‘recifes’ (reefs) that calm the waters of its ports and shoreline. Recife Antigo, situated on its own island by the harbour, is the historic Old Town that dates to the 16th century. To the south, popular Boa Viagem beach is sheltered by reefs and lined by tall apartment blocks, modern hotels and restaurants. Recife is a bustling city with a vibrant cultural, entertainment and restaurant scene and a fabulous carnival, but it's very crowded, so most visitors stay in the charming and far more tranquil historic town of Olinda which lies on Recife’s northern edge, just 3.7 miles (6 km) from the city.
Fernando do Noronha is a pristine volcanic archipelago of 21 islands situated in the Atlantic Ocean, some 326 miles (525km) east of Recife and 217 miles (350km) from Natal. This protected marine park has a jagged coastline and is famous for its spectacular deserted beaches, boasting three of the top five beaches in Brazil, whilst sea turtles, rays, dolphins and reef sharks swim in its warm, clear waters. It is the perfect place to get away from the crowds and do very little at all, but it's also wonderful for snorkelling, walking, diving and sailing.
Fortaleza, the capital of the northeastern state of Ceará, is also known for its beaches, which are punctuated by red cliffs, palm trees, sand dunes and lagoons. Close to the equator on the mainland, you can find more paradise beaches, such as unspoiled Jericoacoara.
