Salta retains a timeless Spanish colonial atmosphere, which is reflected in its many excellent museums and folk music clubs. It is dominated by the Andes and you will see llamas, indigenous communities and Inca ruins. The small town of San Salvadore de Jujuy is the gateway to the magnificent Humahuaca Gorge. Although Jujuy has none of the gentle sophistication of Salta, it is the most indigenous of Argentinean cities and was prominent in the wars of independence with Spain, which invaded repeatedly from Bolivia. There is an urban buzz here, with some of the best nightlife in the country and a thriving art, music and restaurant scene.
You can also visit the majestic Salinas Grandes Salt Flats, the largest in Argentina, stay overnight in the indigenous Indian village of Purmamarca and take the famous narrow gauge Train to the Clouds that ascends the multi-coloured Toro Gorge, a fabulous journey through dense forest and brightly coloured canyons.
To the south of Salta, the vineyards of tranquil Cafayate are set against a spectacular Andean mountain backdrop. This is Argentina’s second largest wine centre after Mendoza, and specialises in making high altitude dry white wine from the Torrontes grape.
