When to go to Amritsar + Shimla

Amritsar has a hot subtropical climate, with a large variation between summer and winter temperatures. The best time to visit Amritsar is from October to March (winter) to a
void the extreme heat of midsummer and the monsoon rains which fall from June to September. In midwinter the temperature can drop to freezing at night.

Shimla in the Himalayas has an alpine climate. The best time to visit Shimla is opposite to the rest of India - ie April to October (the hot summer) when the mountains offer a cool refuge. In mid-winter, heavy snow can hinder overland travel.

Wildlife viewing is best at the end of the dry season (March and April), when animals search out the waterholes and lakes.

Birding is best from October to early April, although it can get very cold in the Himalayas in December and January.
