The beautiful Nicoya Peninsula is located on the northern Pacific Coast and is known for its wonderful beaches and warm, dry tropical climate. Liberia, the regional capital, has an airport making this region very accessible for those wanting Costa Rica beach holidays filled with sunshine and surf.
Once annexed to Nicaragua this region retains its own distinctive feel. From the Gulf of Papagayo in the north, to the Gulf of Nicoya in the south, the coastal villages of the Nicoya Peninsula have developed rapidly and today have many luxury hotels and resorts. Hermosa in the north has a wonderful range of marine activities including deep sea fishing, snorkelling and scuba diving in the Catalinas Islands. Tamarindo is a great surfing centre with a bustling night life and easy access to Las Baulas National Marine Park, which protects Playa Grande - a key nesting beach for leatherback turtles. Near the laid back surfing town of Nosara you will find Ostional beach, a critical nesting site for Olive Ridley sea turtles. Further south you will find more wonderful surfing beaches at towns such as Malpais and Santa Teresa.
On the mainland to the east, the Guanacaste Mountains are home to Rincón de la Vieja, an active volcano, as well as a number of national parks. The volcano is over 6,000 ft high and Rincon de la Vieja National Park protects some of the last dry forest in the region. You can hike to waterfalls and seek out hot springs and bubbling volcanic mud pools on its slopes.
