This wonderful walking holiday in South Africa includes hiking in the majestic Drakensberg Mountains - a World Heritage Site. Stay in a simple KwaZulu Wildlife rest camp to view Bushman paintings at Giants Castle, huge vultures & local flora, then transfer to Royal Natal National Park, where you can hike to the Amphitheatre. Afterwards enjoy a Big Five safari in malaria-free Nambiti Game Reserve. All transfers & game drives included.

Day 1
You will be met at Durban Airport and transferred 3-hours to Giants Castle in the spectacular uKhahlamba Drakensberg Mountains, recognised as a World Heritage site due to its vast collection of Bushman paintings.

Known locally as the Barrier of Spears, the dramatic Drakensberg Mountains form the backbone of Southern Africa, running all the way down from the Great Rift Valley. Check into your simple KZN Wildlife self-catering rest camp (with limited restaurant and bar) in this area of unspoilt natural beauty.
Days 2 To 3
At leisure to relax in the Giants Castle region of the Drakensberg Mountains.

There are many excellent walking trails and hikes available in these mountains, with some of the best Bushman rock art sites. Horse riding, mountain biking and fly fishing are available at some lodges.

Bird watching is also outstanding and you can arrange (in advance) to visit the Vulture Hide, accessible only by 4x4 vehicle. Here you can see Cape vultures, ravens and a variety of buzzards and eagles. If you are fortunate you may even see a rare Bearded Vulture. The best time of year to visit this hide is from May to September.
Day 4
Today transfer 3-hours through beautiful mountain scenery to the spectacular Royal Natal National Park in the far northern Drakensberg Mountains.

Check into your mountain resort in this area of great natural beauty, with its many wonderful walks in the shadow of the dramatic Amphitheatre.
Days 5 To 7
At leisure to walk in the northern Drakensberg Mountains, where the magnificent Amphitheatre dominates the landscape of Royal Natal National Park.

The superlative scenery and fresh mountain air are ideal for walking holidays at any level of fitness. Your hotel will organise guided walks each day – typically one short walk and one long walk, or a walk to a San Bushman painting.

There is also the option of hiking with a specialist mountain guide to the Mont-Aux Sources, where suddenly the Tugela River drops over 3,000 feet to create the second highest waterfall in the world. From the top of the Amphitheatre you can view KwaZulu Natal thousands of feet below. This hike is only for the fit and active and must be pre-booked.

The mountains also offer an outstanding location for bird watching – particularly raptors, but also sunbirds, waxbills and the numerous other species found in the grasslands, riverine scrub and natural forests. Other activities include horse riding in the mountains and fly fishing.
Day 8
Today transfer 1.5-hours from the Drakensberg Mountains, travelling via Ladysmith to the malaria-free Nambiti Game Reserve.

Check into your Big Five safari lodge and enjoy a thrilling afternoon open-top game drive with a lodge ranger.
Days 9 To 10
Rise early when game viewing conditions are at their best, for a shared open-top game drive with a lodge ranger in Nambiti Game Reserve.

With a mixed vegetation of savanna grasslands, indigenous trees and bushveld, this wildlife conservation area is home to all the Big Five, as well as offering an ideal habitat for a large variety of plains game and abundant bird life. Although leopard are rarely seen, this reserve offers excellent opportunities to spot the endangered cheetah. Return to the lodge for lunch and some relaxation, before returning to the bushveld in the late afternoon for another exciting game drive.

Note: Children < 2 years are not allowed on open top game drives, with higher age limits applicable at certain lodges.
Day 11
After a final early morning safari in Nambiti Game Reserve, transfer 3.5-hours to Durban Airport for your flight home.
